Clavet takes title in USTA 40s

You don’t see too many former top-20 players on the ITF seniors’ circuit.

But former No. 18 Francisco Clavet, now 51, is now a perfect 15-0 on the seniors circuit.

And he gave the rest of the draw a shot by playing down in the USTA National 40s Hard Court Championships last week in La Jolla, Calif.

Clavet, who gave up as much as a decade to his opponents, dropped one set in six matches – to three-time former champion Jeff Greenwald in the rain-delayed semis earlier Sunday.

He needed exactly an hour to beat No. 5 seed Samuel Schroerlucke in the final, 6-2, 6-2.
