Wimbledon wild cards announced

(We’ll update this list as more wild cards are announced)

LONDON – It’s the annual wild-card Wednesday at Wimbledon.

And, as is often the case, there are few surprises as the All-England Club reveals its pass list for the 2019 edition.

Well, some of them.

Some wild cards are still to be announced. And some will not be discerned at all, with those remaining spots given back to those next into the various draws by ranking.

It’s no surprise that occasional doubles player Lleyton Hewitt has received a wild card into the doubles (He just can’t quit it, can he?).

The “retired” Hewitt has already played seven doubles events this season: one each with Alex de Minaur, Alexei Popyrin and John-Patrick Smith. The four others have been with Jordan Thompson, who reached the ‘s-Hertogenbosch singles final last week.

Only with Thompson in Sydney (they won two matches to reach the semifinals) has the 38-year-old Australian Davis Cup captain won a match in 2019. But he and his partners have been competitive in all of them.

Hewitt won the Wimbledon singles title in 2002, and last was in the singles draw in 2015.

He didn’t play doubles from 2000 to 2010 – the peak singles years. But he has played doubles every year since with the exception of 2017.

As for Baghdatis, now 33 and ranked No. 139, he certainly seems to be a nice fellow who gets a lot of nice things. He hasn’t played for about six weeks, since a tour of Challengers in Asia.

He was a singles semifinalist back in 2006.
