No Laver Cup in Geneva for Wawrinka

It would have been sweet if Geneva’s Laver Cup had both Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka.

But Wawrinka will play St. Petersburg that week.

“Stan wanted to play in Geneva … and he tried to make it work,” Wawrinka agent Lawrence Frankopan told Tages Anzeiger.

The problem? Money/respect. Or respect/money.

The Laver Cup’s rigid appearance-fee structure is tied to ranking. Team Stan felt CEO Steve Zacks disrespected the three-time Slam champ by not sweetening the offer given he’s coming back from surgery, and given his status in Switzerland.

So he’ll take some $$, and some ranking points, in Russia.
