Achilles takes Monfils out of IW

Just as he was playing lights-out tennis, Gaël Monfils’s body let him down again.

An inflamed Achilles forced a walkover Thursday night against Dominic Thiem. He’d been feeling it for a few days.

“A lot of my injuries people think it was because I was lazy or not doing the job, and I always tell them that, you know, it’s part of luck sometime,” he said. “Sometime some people are more fragile.”

Monfils remembered playing with an injury against Thiem at Indian Wells in 2017. Four days later he was on crutches, missing Miami.

He didn’t want a repeat.
