Berdych says goodbye to Davis Cup

At 32, Tomas Berdych has played his last Davis Cup tie.

“I reached the point when it’s impossible for me to perform at the highest level without proper rest,” Berdych wrote in a statement. “I must think of my physical abilities and try to save some energy in order to continue in my career.”

Berdych played 29 ties – every year from 2003 to 2014, and then 2016. The extra-draining part was how often he also was counted on in doubles, where he went 21-2.

The Czechs won it in 2012 and 2013. But they’re relegated down to the zonal competition for 2018.
