Azarenka out of Stanford with virus

Originally, the Stanford WTA Tour event was to be Victoria Azarenka’s first tournament back after maternity leave.

She ended up returning early, during the grass-court season.

But the Belarussian, who turns 28 Monday, won’t make Stanford. She was forced to withdraw after being sick with a viral illness all week.

She hadn’t planned to play the Rogers Cup in Toronto, leaving a week between Stanford and Cincinnati as she paces herself in her comeback.

Will that change? We’ll see.
