France’s Caroline Garcia spoiled the party Friday.
Although she probably doesn’t care.
Had Elina Svitolina managed to eke out their quarterfinal – Garcia won 6-7 (5), 7-5, 7-6 (6) in three hours, 21 minutes – the possibility of the Beijing women’s singles final determining the new No. 1 on the WTA Tour would still have been alive.
Svitolina would have had to meet No. 2 seed Simona Halep. So a lot of “ifs” remained on the table. But still.
The match would have been Halep’s third No. 1 showdown final this season; the first came against Jelena Ostapenko in Paris; the second in Cincinnati.
