Garbiñe Muguruza the new No. 1

With her loss to American Coco Vandeweghe in the US Open quarterfinals Wednesday, Karolina Pliskova also will lose the No. 1 ranking.

A finalist in New York a year ago, she needed to reach the final again to defend the ranking points required to maintain the top spot.

She didn’t. And so Wimbledon champion Garbiñe Muguruza of Spain will be the new top dog(ette) when the updated WTA Tour rankings come out on Monday.

Muguruza wasn’t sweating it Tuesday – she was having a cheat day in Central Park before leaving New York.
