American Osuigwe, 15, wins juniors

The All-American junior girls’ final in Paris will please those tracking the next wave of U.S. tennis.

Whitney Osuigwe, 15, defeated Claire Liu 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3 to win the title Saturday.

She is the first American since Jennifer Capriati in 1989 to win the French Open girls’ title. Capriati was barely 13 at the time.

Osuigwe, whose father is a coach at the IMG Academy in Florida, was the No. 7 seed. Liu, 17, was seeded No. 6 and defeated Osuigwe 6-1, 6-1 in the Eastern Bowl tournament in California just two months ago.
