John Isner – shock Rome semifinalist

It’s no shock John Isner is playing well on the clay. But it is a shock that he has made it to the Italian Open semifinals.

Isner didn’t even begin his European clay-court season until this week. He said at the Roger Federer exhibition in Seattle that he’d been ill and lost more than 10 pounds. He hadn’t even played a real match in a month.

Isner defeated top-10 players Stan Wawrinka and Marin Cilic the last two rounds. He’s the first American semifinalist in Rome since Andy Roddick in 2008.
