Patience pays off for Sandgren

When you reach your first career ATP Tour singles main draw at the age of nearly 26, you are one stubborn cat.

Tennys Sandgren, a familiar name for years because of his appropriate tennis name, did it Sunday when he qualified for the U.S. Men’s Clay-Court Championship in Houston. He’ll play wild card Ernesto Escobedo in the first round.

Top-10 as a junior , Sandren had played qualifying in 12 Grand Slam tournaments but just two ATP-level events before this weekend. After hip surgery three years ago, it’s been a long way back.
